Built for Survival in Modern War
This unique machine can withstand an explosion equivalent to 10 kilograms of TNT (STANAG 4569 standard). It boasts the thickest side armour and is adapted for the installation of dome style electronic warfare systems against FPV drones — giving crews the maximum chance of survival on today’s battlefield.
Designed with War Experience in Mind
Developed and manufactured in Ukraine, the Sova draws inspiration from South Africa’s Mbombe armoured vehicle. Engineers, working closely with the military, incorporated three decades of lessons from local conflicts and the specific realities of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The result is a vehicle offering the highest level of crew protection.
Specifications
- Weight: 14.2–15 tonnes, depending on configuration
- Engine: 8.9 litre turbo diesel, 450 hp — the most powerful among Ukrainian special armoured vehicles
- Ground clearance: 45 cm, comparable to heavy military trucks
- Height: under 2.8 m
- Capacity: 2 crew members plus 6–8 troops
- Electronic warfare modules: up to 10, providing full dome protection against airborne FPV kamikaze drones
Unique Advantages
The MAC OWL Sova is an MRAP class armoured vehicle — purpose-built to protect against mines and ambushes. It features a load-bearing armoured hull with a V-shaped underside, specialised shock-absorbing crew seats, and inertia-resistant components.
Ukraine’s Safest MRAP
The vehicle preserves crew lives even when striking a mine with a blast equivalent to 10 kilograms of TNT — the highest protection level for wheeled vehicles under STANAG 4569. Its side armour is 16 mm thick, the strongest among both domestic and foreign counterparts.
The Result
The Sova offers a range of advantages over other Ukrainian and international armoured vehicles:
- Highest crew protection against mines
- Lowest silhouette for reduced visibility
- Most powerful engine in its class
- Thickest lower and side armour
- Largest ground clearance
- Independent hydropneumatic suspension for exceptional ride smoothness
- Servo-assisted rear ramp for rapid troop deployment
These features give the crew and assault team the greatest possible battlefield survivability and operational flexibility.
Ukrainian Armed Forces Expand Fleet of MRAPs
In 2025, the Ukrainian Armed Forces received 25 per cent more special armoured vehicles compared with 2024. Most of these machines were built to the MRAP design standard, meaning enhanced protection against mines and ambushes.
These vehicles feature a V-shaped hull to deflect blast energy, shock-absorbing crew seats, and a monolithic armoured capsule combined with external blast-absorbing components such as wheels, chassis and engine.
